Nicholas Crombach

b. 1989, Kingston (ON)

Nicholas Crombach is an artist based in Kingston, Ontario. His work explores subjects derived from the styles and motifs associated with fine and decorative arts of past eras. He disrupts these historical references by incorporating unexpected materials, details, and gestures to create contemporary confrontations that engage with natural history and other museum practices of collection, and display. Through this exploration, Crombach produces a visual dialogue that reimagines the familiar, challenges perceptions and invites contemplation on the intricate interplay between nature and culture in the rapidly shifting landscape of the Anthropocene. A recipient of the prestigious Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award, Crombach has exhibited his work solo across Canada, as well as in London and in Berlin. Crombach’s Chariot Burial acts as the central work to his exhibition Landslip previously presented in 2023 at Art Mûr Gallery in Montreal and at the Woodstock Art Gallery. This winter, Crombach’s exhibition Landslip will be shown again at the Karsh-Masson Gallery in Ottawa (Nov. 7 2024- Mar. 23, 2025). Among his notable public art installations are Horse and Cart in Kingston, Ontario; Wind Vane in Woodstock, Ontario; and Flock in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Crombach’s works are part of both private and public collections, including the Woodstock Art Gallery, the City of Kingston Civic Collection, and the City of Ottawa Art Collection.
