Karine Payette: Sans espèces. Des espaces
Alfred-Pellan Room
Maison des arts de Laval (QC)

No cash. Spaces. Species are not there. And yet their presence can be felt everywhere through Karine Payette’s new exhibition. Her new installations recreate spaces that evoke conditioned environments such as the zoo, pet shops, curiosity cabinets or the circus. These are closed environments that condition an alienated behavior of the animal for which there is a loss of the value of time and space, a loss of freedom and even of primary existence. Certainly, the artist’s installations appeal to this questioning of the domestication of animals, but it is also a synthesis of several aesthetic researches specific to the field of contemporary art. His work is also dependent on the great thematic in art history on the living, especially the animal world.
