Emy Gagnon Gélinas: Entre temps et courants
End-of-master’s degree exhibition
Text by Emy Gagnon Gélinas

Emy Gagnon Gélinas is an artist who graduated from Concordia University, where she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts before directly pursuing a Master’s Degree in Visual and Media Arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her artistic practice revolves around the intersection of sculpture and drawing, exploring themes related to natural phenomena, collaboration with elements of nature, temporality, and attentive observation. Growing up near the Richelieu River, she draws inspiration from the fluid movements of water, the variations of light on its surface, and the flocks of birds that soar above it. She creates works that capture moments of fragility and transformation, offering an experience where the body is invited to explore and the senses are invited to feel.
The exhibition Entre temps et courants reflects the journey of Emy Gagnon Gélinas throughout her years of research and experimentation during her master’s studies. This research-creation project unfolds through a body of works ranging from drawing to installation, incorporating paper and glass as materials. The exhibition thus engages in a reflection on how elements of nature can both influence and actively participate in the creation of artistic works. By using materials such as glass and paper, which react to water, fire, and light, she seeks to discover how these elements can both transform the materiality of her works and play an active role in their creation. Unpredictability thus becomes a key factor in her process-oriented approach, leading to a collaboration between artistic intentions and natural forces.
