Scarscapes

In the Scar Project (2005-present), Nadia Myre invited over 500 individuals to render their own personal scars (emotional or physical) onto small raw canvases – cutting them and sewing them back together. Derived from this ongoing project, Scarscapes (2010) pursues the artist’s study of our collective visual symbology of trauma and the translation and codification of ideas through the process of schematization and mapping. Myre identified five recurring schematics amongst the “scars” she collected and beaded those symbols, thus making them powerful and universal icons of suffering and survival.
