Ginette Legaré

Ginette Legaré’s artistic practice focuses on the instrumentalist and documentary possibilities of recovered objects through their potential to embody, displace, or suggest meaning. Over the years, her mixed media constructs and installations have explored the social, cultural and perceptual contexts that inform such objects’ relationships with materiality. Legaré was born in Quebec City and now lives and works in Toronto. She earned a BFA from Laval University and an MFA from York University. Her works have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions throughout Canada, in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, the U.S. and in Tokyo, Japan. These have been the subject of reviews and critical essays published in periodicals, various catalogues and online.

Professor Emerita at OCAD University where she has taught until recently in the Sculpture/Installation program and in the Interdisciplinary Art, Media & Design graduate program, Legaré has also held positions at York University and in the University of Toronto / Sheridan College collaborative Art and Art History program. She has been a visiting artist and lecturer in galleries and universities across Canada and abroad.

Recipient of various grants and awards, she is a former member of Cold City Gallery and Mercer Union’s board of directors, through which she co-curated with Alain Reinaudo “For Lack of Evidence”, a group exhibition held in Toronto (1993) and at the Château de la Roche-Guyon, France (1995). Ginette Legaré has served in various committees as an advisor and juror for several arts organizations and public commission projects. Her artworks are included in public, corporate, and private collections. She is represented by the Birch Contemporary gallery, in Toronto and Art Mûr in Montréal.
