With Neapolitan Dream Bevan Ramsay deploys a highly aestheticized treatment of materials and art historical references to explore one of the enduring themes in his work, namely seduction. The installation plays with the issues of control inevitably raised by artwork that draws the viewer in with pleasure, and the interpretative problems that this dynamic may pose. In the “leading astray” implied by the word seduction, passivity and luxury vie with the impulse for independence to create a tension surrounding who has the upper hand in the artistic transaction, the subject or the object. In Neapolitan Dream no ruling on this question is possible though it seems to be demanded.
