I can’t think of a time where I felt complete, a time where it felt right, a time where I didn’t have doubts, is it possible to be self-actualized? This sense of being; self-hood or identity is a blobby festering ball deep within, constantly unfolding and crumpling back onto itself. There are so many questions and contradictions to live through, there is no clean delineation of identity; so often there are markers, pin-points, intersecting lines within a grid, to categorize and label to quantify ourselves or have some other force do this for us, to feel at peace, to be able to understand the ontology of being. It’s ok not to know.
Robyn Mah (b. 1997) living and working in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; she received a BFA in painting from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2020. She works in-between painting and sculpture, unfolding the inconsistencies and contradictions of identity while navigating her own experiences as a biracial woman.
