Bevan Ramsay is a native of Montreal, where he now lives, works and studies for much of the year. After a college-level education in fine arts, he pursued formal training as a cabinetmaker to broaden his technical skill set. In his mid-twenties, he and two partners established a furniture design and production firm that served private and commercial clients both in Canada and internationally. In 2002, Ramsay sold his shares in the business to pursue a double-major undergraduate degree in philosophy and intellectual history at McGill University. During this time, he maintained an active creative career as a freelancer working in both interior and furniture design, while privately sustaining a studio art practice. It was on the strength of this work that he gained acceptance to the Master’s of Fine Arts program at Concordia University in Montreal.
The materiality and aesthetic of Bevan Ramsay’s studio practice is strongly influenced by his professional design background, while its conceptual character reflects his ongoing interest in philosophical issues in art and intellectual history.
